It is no surprise to find Provence on a list of travel destinations.
Long known for its fine views, vineyards, and Mediterranean beaches, the area has continuously attracted those seeking luxury and natural beauty. Domaine de la Baume is nonetheless a truly unique resort. Set into the hills between the Verdon Gorges and the French riviera, Tourtour is a lovely french village that will enchant you with its restaurants and attractions. That is, of course, if you choose to leave the inn to visit it.
Set on 99 acres, Domain de la Baume was the final home of French artist Bernard Buffet, who chose it no doubt for its inspiring views and comfortable atmosphere. Though the undulating terrain seems ill-suited to farming, the property was once exclusively used agricultural production. Today, there are still 558 olive trees which produce over 2000 liters of olive oil per year. The grounds also include beehives used to make honey, an orangery, and a stable.
The horses, though a lovely addition to the landscape, are more than decorative. Guests may take them for rides around the property’s trails on their own, and hotel staff can also offer advice on trails beyond le Domaine’s borders. Trail rides are a delightful opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the property, covered in pine trees and truffle oaks.
A kitchen garden allows Chef François Martin the freshest ingredients for his variety of exquisite dishes, served on the terrace or on white linens laid out in the meadow.
The grounds also include a formal French-style garden complete with ponds, an olive grove, a pool house, a chapel, and even waterfalls, beneath which guests can swim or receive massages.
Inside the majestic building, prestigious elegance is found in every detail. Period furniture, aged tile floors, and a series of lounge areas, each cozier than the last are often occupied by guests curled up with their books or engaged in animated discussions over a Provençal aperitif. Unless, of course, they are out playing tennis, mountain biking, or sunbathing by the pool.
The Inn is accessible from airports in Toulon, Marseilles, or Nice, each about an hour drive, or by train from Avignon or London. Rates range from 440€ to 1760€ and include the use of all facilities (including the stables) as well as breakfast and dinner.
