Castlehyde: A stunning mansion

[portfolio_slideshow id=6681]

A stunning Palladian mansion at the heart of a magical estate in all about c.150 acres.
Beautifully situated on the banks of the Blackwater, regarded as one of Ireland’s best for salmon fishing, Castlehyde is a wonderfully restored estate within easy reach of both Cork and Dublin.

Built in the Palladian style and to the design of the elder Abraham Hargrave, Castlehyde was completed for John Hyde in ca 1801. Castlehyde was the seat of the Hyde family, of which Douglas Hyde was the founder of the Gaelic League and 1st President of Ireland.
Approached from the north through an impressive stone pier entrance next to The Lodge, an immaculate drive sweeps through a magnificent woodland and opens out to the full view of the River Blackwater as it finally sweeps up to the front of the house.

Castlehyde faces south overlooking the River Blackwater which flows through the estate. The design of the house, and in particular through the course of the most recent restoration, has enabled almost all of the reception rooms and bedrooms to have commanding views of the river.

When the current owner’s family bought the estate in 1999, it was regarded as almost beyond repair. An ambitious and extensive restoration project was conceived and completed over the course of 4 years. This remarkable project resulted in an outstanding transformation of the estate to what is considered to be one of the finest in Ireland today.

Directions: From Cork, take the N8 (M8) north towards Mitchelstown. Turn off the motorway at junction 15 and follow the R639 towards Fermoy town centre. Cross-over the River Blackwater on the R369 and turn left onto the N72 for Mallow. Follow the N72 for approximately 7.2km and the entrance to Castlehyde will be on the left.
