The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) equestrian team again made their place in IHSA history by winning the 2024 Hunter Seat Team Championship title at the National Championship held on May 5th in Mill Spring, North Carolina. This victory marks their fourth IHSA national title, solidifying SCAD’s equestrian program as a force to be reckoned with.

Beyond the team achievement, SCAD athletes shone brightly on an individual level. Sophomore Alex Alston secured a dazzling double win, claiming the Champion titles in both Dover Saddlery Individual Open Equitation Over Fences and Open Team Flat. Alston’s talent extended further, earning the highest overall score among Interscholastic Equestrian Association alumni in the Over Fences event.

The list of SCAD’s individual champions doesn’t stop there. Peter Cavagnac, a B.F.A. advertising and branding student, dominated the Chronicle of the Horse Team Limit Equitation on the Flat, while Kameron Riggs, a B.F.A. performing arts major, triumphed in the Team Introductory competition.

This championship win is the crowning achievement of a truly dominant season for SCAD equestrian. They swept victories in four Team National Championships, including the Overall Tournament of Champions National Title, the American National Riding Commission (ANRC) Novice Division National Title and Reserve, and the ANRC National Division National Title and Reserve.

Led by Head Coach Ashley Henry since 2005, SCAD’s equestrian program has built a legacy of excellence. Their impressive record speaks for itself: Collegiate Cup Champions in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2024, alongside Collegiate Cup Reserve Champion titles in 2018, 2019, and 2023.

The win further solidifies SCAD’s reputation as a leader in both creative education and equestrian sports. It’s a place where artistic expression thrives alongside a championship-caliber equestrian program.
