The Backstory
The former head of Venezuela’s treasury, Alejandro Andrade, recently plead guilty to taking $1 billion in bribes and has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for money laundering.
His sentencing came as Venezuela is in a crushing crisis, which has led to three million Venezuelans fleeing the country. The New York Times said, “The opulent lifestyle of the Andrade family was as spectacular as the economic collapse of the country they left behind. The family lived in a mansion in Florida surrounded by show horses, as neighbors peeked over the property line in awe. The family patriarch, Alejandro Andrade, had been a bodyguard of President Hugo Chávez before rising to powerful positions in his government.”
U.S Federal agents have seized real estate properties, fine watches, 10 cars including a Bentley, three Mercedes-Benz, and a Porsche, three jets, as well as horses that sold for over $2 million in an earlier auction.
The Florida properties are being auctioned by the U.S. Department of the Treasury in conjunction with Homeland Security Investigations.
