Perched on a sunny plateau 4,035 feet above sea level, up above the spa town of Merano, in Italy’s South Tyrol mountains, Miramonti is one of those small, sure-footed Alpine hotels that horse people fall for the moment they arrive. The setting alone is worth the drive: the property sits on a 74-acre forest estate in Hafling, South Tyrol, framed on one side by the snow-tipped Texel Group and on the other by the 13th-century chapel of St. Kathrein, the symbol of the village.
Even more compelling for equestrians is what lies just around the corner: the Haflinger Stud Farm Sulfner, on the plateau that gave the breed its name.
Miramonti is small by design, with 47 rooms and suites ranging from the intimate style rooms, with herringbone timber floors, hand-loomed Mossmer fabrics from local Tyrolean workshops, to the architecturally bold design lofts with their smoked oak, muted rust, and moss green, where an open bathroom sits before a full-height glass wall and the Alps fill the view. The freestanding Monti houses, tucked into the forest, are the prize: minimalist, peaked-roof retreats sheltered by rock and pine, open to a panorama that drops more than a thousand meters into the valley. Chef Massimo Geromel was featured in the Guide Michelin and has been awarded 15 Gault Millau points.
The spa brings together a salt-water infinity pool, a Finnish forest sauna, and a Japanese-inspired Onsen pool.
