The Reining by the Bay held its first competition in 1999 at the Horse Park at Woodside. Since then, it has evolved into the  event that it is today, attracting competitors and guests from all over the U.S. as well as Canada, Brazil and Mexico. The beautiful surroundings and amazing climate of the San Francisco peninsula make for an ideal location to hold such a prestigious event.

Reining is a judged event designed to show the athletic ability of a horse within the a show arena. In National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) competition, contestants are required to run a pre-selected, approved pattern including small slow circles, large fast circles, flying lead changes, roll backs over the hocks, 360-degree spins done in place, and exciting sliding stops that are the hallmark of the reining horse.
